A loan application does not lead immediately to a payout. Your information must be assessed, questions may need answering, a specific offer must be made and a contract concluded. For agreements covered by the Consumer Credit Act, the statutory right of withdrawal also applies. Knowing these steps helps you plan more realistically and avoid unnecessary delays.

When preparing, the amount you want, a suitable term and complete information matter more than submitting as quickly as possible. A careful start often saves a later search for missing details.

Step 1: clarify your need and monthly commitment

Decide what you need financing for and how much you need. If you want to refinance an existing loan, the outstanding balance is different from an additional sum you want paid out to you. Make this distinction clear from the enquiry stage.

Then check which monthly payment fits your budget. A loan calculator shows how the amount, interest and term affect payments. A budget calculation instead considers your income and expenses. Both results provide guidance; neither replaces the lender’s assessment.

If the possible amount is still unclear, read How much can I afford to borrow?. If the amount is established, read Which loan term fits my budget?.

Step 2: prepare a complete and accurate enquiry

An initial contact usually requires less information than the final assessment. As the process progresses, your personal and financial circumstances are decisive. Have identification, income evidence and your main cost details ready.

Pay particular attention to information that can be misunderstood: is the salary stated after withholding tax? Are health insurance costs for you alone or the whole family? Is an existing loan still outstanding or already repaid? A short explanation can be more useful here than an additional figure without context.

According to Budgetcredit’s published process information, enquiries can be made online, by telephone or in person. Budgetcredit: how it works

Step 3: have documents and your financial situation assessed

The lender assesses whether financing is possible under the statutory rules and its own criteria. For cash loans within scope, the KKG requires an affordability assessment before the contract is concluded. Information may be checked through salary records, official documents and other appropriate evidence. KKG, Art. 27a, 28 and 31

An initial positive response is therefore not necessarily final approval. Ask whether documents, identity verification or a final decision are still outstanding. You will then know whether you can plan with definite financing or only have an interim result.

The time required depends on the case. Complete, clearly legible documents make processing easier. Complex income evidence or inconsistent information may require further checks. A general statement about fast processing does not guarantee a payout date.

Step 4: understand the actual offer

An offer should show the amount available, the applicable interest rate and how repayment works. Do not only check whether the monthly instalment seems comfortable. Also compare the full term and total costs.

These questions help when reviewing it:

  • Does the loan amount match your need and the payout actually intended?
  • Are the instalment, number of payments and payment dates clear?
  • Is the effective annual interest rate stated?
  • What costs does optional insurance add?
  • Which conditions apply to early repayment?

With a refinancing loan, part of the financing may go directly towards an existing debt. Clarify how much is paid freely to you and how much goes to a previous lender.

Step 5: check and conclude the contract

For cash loans within scope, the KKG requires a written contract and a copy for the consumer. Required details include the loan amount, interest, repayment arrangements and information about the right of withdrawal. KKG, Art. 9

Check that the contract matches the offer discussed. Sign only when questions about the amount, insurance or repayment are resolved. Whether conclusion takes place on paper or through an electronic solution suitable for the purpose depends on the offered procedure and statutory formal requirements.

Keep your contract copy and related documents. This includes the insurance terms if you choose protection.

Step 6: distinguish the withdrawal period from payout

For consumer credit agreements within scope, the proposal to conclude the contract or the acceptance may generally be withdrawn in writing within 14 days. The period starts on receipt of the legally required contract copy. It does not simply begin when you visit the website or enter figures in a non-binding calculator. KKG, Art. 16

Budgetcredit describes payout after the statutory waiting period has expired. The specific date also depends on all conditions being met and documents being complete. Budgetcredit: payout

A “quick loan decision” must therefore be distinguished from “money already available”. If you plan a purchase for a fixed date, agree the timetable before making binding commitments to third parties.

Step 7: organise repayment

After payout, check the first due date and payment reference. Arrange payment so that the instalment arrives on time. An outdated reference or wrong recipient can make allocation difficult.

Keep track of the outstanding balance, contract duration and any insurance documents. If your situation worsens, contact the lender early. Do not wait until several payments are overdue.

If you later want to repay in full, request an up-to-date settlement amount for the intended date. The KKG provides rights for early fulfilment of agreements within scope. KKG, Art. 17

Frequently asked questions

Is a non-binding enquiry already a signed loan agreement?

No. An initial enquiry, assessment and conclusion of a loan agreement are different steps. What matters is the declaration you actually make in the relevant process.

Can I speed up an application?

You can provide complete, current information and clearly legible evidence, and answer questions promptly. This does not bypass statutory periods or the lender’s decision.

What if I need less money than I applied for?

Report the change before conclusion. The contract should fit your actual need. Agreements already concluded must be handled according to their terms and the applicable statutory rules.

Prepare the next step

If the amount and budget fit, you can enquire about financing with Budgetcredit. For outstanding questions, reach the advisory team on 0800 55 55 00.

An indication is not a binding offer. Credit must not be granted if it would lead to over-indebtedness.
