Decision, contract and receipt of money happen at different times

A quick response to a loan application does not mean money is immediately in your account. Initial enquiry, assessment, contract and payout involve different steps. Their duration depends on complete documents, the specific case and the lender’s processes. A blanket promise for everyone would therefore be misleading.

For a contract with a right of withdrawal under the Consumer Credit Act (KKG), the statutory period also applies. Many lenders schedule payout after it expires. Advertised fast processing must not be confused with guaranteed immediate payment. Commit to an urgent purchase only once financing and the actual payout date are clear.

Which steps take time

  • Recording the borrowing request and personal details.
  • Assessing income, expenses, commitments and other requirements.
  • Obtaining or completing the necessary documents.
  • Individual offer and correct conclusion of the agreement.
  • Accounting for applicable withdrawal rules and payout conditions.
  • Executing and posting the bank transfer.

An automated acknowledgement is not yet a lending decision. Likewise, an initial positive assessment is not always final approval. When receiving feedback, ask which step is actually complete and what is still missing. This distinction is especially important if a seller already expects payment.

For refinancing, part of the new amount may go directly towards settling previous borrowing. The amount in your own account is then lower than the new contract amount. Clarify recipients and partial amounts as well as the date. “Payout” need not mean the entire sum is freely transferred to your account.

What the 14-day withdrawal period means

Art. 16 KKG provides withdrawal in writing within 14 days for the agreements concerned. The period starts when you receive the contract copy, not when you ask a general question during advice. The actual scope and statutory exceptions must be observed. This right must not be assumed automatically for loans outside the KKG.

The law also covers situations where a loan was paid out before withdrawal. A blanket statement that the KKG prohibits every earlier payout without exception is therefore inaccurate. The lender’s actual payout conditions are a separate matter. For your planning, confirmed arrangements count, not an earliest possible exception you calculate yourself.

The period protects your decision. It should not be treated as an annoying formality supposedly removable for an extra fee. Before signing, check the instalment, term, total costs and repayment obligation. More about the process is available in Withdrawing from a loan agreement.

What you can speed up yourself

Submit requested documents completely, legibly and through the designated secure channel. Ensure names, addresses and income details agree. If a payslip figure differs from your entry, explain clearly which components are included. A clear supplement is usually more helpful than several inconsistent versions.

For refinancing, have a current settlement statement ready and respond promptly to specific questions. Avoid uncoordinated parallel identical enquiries. More applications do not automatically produce a faster or better decision. The document checklist helps you prepare systematically.

How to interpret “instant loan” advertising

Ask what “instant” actually means: a calculator display, an automated preliminary decision, personal feedback or money available in the account. These are not interchangeable services. Do not let time pressure make you skip costs or the contract.

Advance payments to supposedly unlock a loan are particularly concerning. Urgent financial circumstances make such promises tempting, not reliable. A responsible provider explains remaining steps and does not request inaccurate information to secure faster approval.

Keep a realistic plan for urgent expenses

If a bill falls due before the possible payout date, ask the creditor early whether another payment arrangement is possible. Do not enter a new purchase commitment relying solely on unconfirmed financing. Even a positive decision may still carry specific conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does a preliminary decision mean money is in my account?

No. Assessment, conclusion and payout are separate steps.

Does the withdrawal period start with the first conversation?

No. For an agreement under Art. 16 KKG, it starts on receipt of the contract copy.

Can I expect a guaranteed same-day payout?

Not solely because of a quick response. Confirmed conditions and the actual payment process are decisive.

Sources and information date

Information as of 13 October 2026. The applicable rules, individual assessment and contract documents are decisive.

Credit must not be granted if it would lead to over-indebtedness. A budget calculation provides a non-binding indication, not a loan offer.
