Protecting loan repayments: when is payment protection insurance worthwhile?

When is payment protection worthwhile? Understand benefits, exclusions, waiting periods and costs of loan insurance in Switzerland.

Payment protection insurance may cover payments under certain conditions when an insured event occurs. Whether it suits you depends on the actual cover, exclusions, periods and costs. The label “loan protection” alone does not tell you when or how much will be paid.

The most important decision is therefore not simply “with or without insurance”, but: what shortfall would arise for me, and does this particular contract actually cover it? Insurance replaces neither an affordable budget nor a reserve for everyday life.

Which risks may be covered?

Depending on the product, benefits may be available for involuntary unemployment, incapacity to earn due to illness or accident, and death. The scope of benefits varies. Some events may be covered within the loan, while others are offered as optional cover at extra cost.

Budgetcredit’s information page describes optional payment protection for incapacity to work or earn and involuntary unemployment. The conditions applying to your particular financing must be set out in the relevant insurance documents. Budgetcredit: payment protection insurance

Insurance does not necessarily pay money to you personally. Depending on the agreement, it may cover loan instalments or settle an insured outstanding balance. Check the recipient and purpose of the benefit as well as its amount.

Loan instalments, outstanding debt and income are not the same

Protection of loan instalments is not a general guarantee of your previous income. If your monthly loan instalment is CHF 600 and you also have CHF 3'500 in household costs, covering the instalment does not automatically solve the entire financial problem.

Likewise, outstanding debt cover on death differs from time-limited instalment payments during unemployment. The first concerns an unpaid principal amount; the second concerns an ongoing commitment. Ask explicitly which event triggers which benefit.

This distinction prevents otherwise useful protection from being overestimated. It should close a clearly identified gap, rather than merely create a reassuring feeling.

Three points to read carefully in the terms

Who is insured? Clarify whether cover applies to the applicant and which rules apply when there is more than one contracting party. Also check the requirements concerning employment, residence and age.

When do benefits start? There may be periods without entitlement after the insurance starts or after an event occurs. Products define deferred periods and waiting periods differently. The definitions in your terms matter, not just the heading.

How long are benefits paid, and up to what amount? Cover may be limited per month, per claim and over the full contract duration. Employment ending or reaching a certain age may also matter.

As a specific provider example, the Helvetia terms for BANK-now, December 2025 edition, stipulate a waiting period of two calendar months and further requirements for certain incapacity benefits. Self-employed people are not insured against unemployment under those terms. These details are product-specific and must not be applied to every loan insurance policy. Which exclusions may matter?

Look particularly for rules concerning known health problems, existing or foreseeable dismissal, voluntarily leaving a job and fixed-term employment. Whether such circumstances are excluded or trigger a particular requirement depends on the contract chosen.

A general statement such as “covered in case of illness” does not establish the required degree or duration of impairment. Nor is every reduction in income an insured event. The insurance documents must fit your actual employment and living situation.

Cembra also states for its payment protection that the agreements, conditions and exclusions specified in the policy are decisive. When comparing products, you should therefore do more than compare the names of insured risks. Cembra: payment protection conditions

What does protection cost over the full term?

Ask for the insurance premium to be shown separately from interest and principal. A small monthly figure can add up to a significant amount over several years. Compare the total outlay with and without the chosen additional cover.

A freely chosen example: if the loan instalment is CHF 600 and the additional premium remains CHF 30 a month throughout, you pay CHF 630 in total. Over 60 months, premiums alone come to CHF 1'800. This is purely a calculation aid, not a tariff from Budgetcredit or an insurer.

Item in the example Monthly Over 60 months
Loan instalment CHF 600 CHF 36'000
Additional insurance premium CHF 30 CHF 1'800
Total monthly payment CHF 630 CHF 37'800

Not every product calculates its premium in the same way. Also check how cover or premiums end or are settled when the loan is repaid early.

How do you assess its value for your circumstances?

First consider how long your available reserves could cover an instalment. Then clarify which payments would continue in the event of lost income. Ask about existing benefits before assessing additional cover; multiple policies do not automatically mean that all payments can be added together without limits.

Compare this starting position with the proposed contract: does your employment arrangement qualify? Can you bridge a waiting period? Is the maximum benefit enough? Would an event especially relevant to you be excluded? These questions make the value concrete.

If the extra premium already makes your normal budget too tight, reconsider the loan amount and the financing as a whole. A product intended to protect against a possible future burden should not undermine affordability today.

What should you do when an event occurs?

Report the claim promptly through the designated channel and have the required evidence ready. Clarify with the lender and insurer who needs which documents and how ongoing instalments are handled pending the decision.

Do not stop payments on your own initiative. In its unemployment claims information, Cembra expressly states that instalments remain payable until the claim is accepted. The specific agreements for your own contract must be followed. Cembra: unemployment information

Frequently asked questions

Is optional payment protection required for every loan?

No. Voluntary additional cover must be distinguished from components already included in a product. Ask what is mandatory, included or optional.

Does insurance guarantee a higher loan amount?

No. Affordability must be sufficient independently. Insurance does not eliminate a lack of affordability, and its premium is an additional cost.

Am I insured whenever my employment ends?

There is no general answer. Definitions, eligibility conditions, periods and exclusions determine whether you have a claim. Checking the contract is especially important when voluntarily changing jobs or when dismissal is already foreseeable.

Decide on the basis of the actual terms

Discuss with Budgetcredit what protection comes with the financing offered. Have the costs and insurance terms explained before conclusion. For affordability, also read Calculating a budget for a loan.

The insurance examples mentioned are not a promise of cover. The terms applicable to the actual contract are decisive. Credit must not be granted if it would lead to over-indebtedness.
