Borrowing capacity too low: which steps help?
When a budget estimate falls below your requested amount, check the information, clarify the need and consider realistic options without false promises.

Insufficient capacity is a reason to clarify the situation
If a budget indication is below the amount you want, distinguish two things: your need remains, but the calculation so far does not support that financing. Helpful advice explains the gap and checks the basis. It neither silently replaces your request with a smaller sum nor promises an exception later.
A simplified calculator’s result is not a binding rejection. Missing or inaccurate information can affect the indication. A careful application assessment may produce a different result. It must not, however, be presented as a guaranteed route to a larger amount. If actual affordability is insufficient, a loan within the Consumer Credit Act (KKG) cannot lawfully be approved.
Check the information first
Review net salary, housing costs, household details, health insurance premiums, taxes and existing commitments. Are child allowances already included in net salary? Have family premiums been entered both as a total and separately? Will an existing loan continue or be settled? Such distinctions can change a calculation without concealing expenses.
Unknown costs must not simply be entered as zero. An optimistic omission is not real borrowing capacity. Conversely, documented errors should be corrected rather than accepting an understated indication without checking. A list of confirmed details, estimated items and evidence still required is useful.
Keep the requested amount and underlying need distinct
Suppose you need 40'000 francs but the initial indication shows only 25'000 francs. The unexplained gap is then 15'000 francs. Advice should first establish what the whole sum is needed for and by when. The lower amount must not automatically become your new application.
The project may contain essential and deferrable parts. Perhaps a cheaper offer already exists or your own funds can cover a portion. Such possibilities only become clear through a specific discussion of needs. A lower amount is a solution only if it genuinely meets the essential need and you want it.
Why a longer term does not solve everything
With the same conditions, a longer contract term lowers the monthly instalment but generally increases total interest. Cash loans within the KKG still require the statutory assessment assuming repayment within 36 months. A long term therefore cannot simply bypass legally insufficient affordability.
In your personal budget too, the smaller instalment is only one side of the decision. You commit for longer and face the risk of changed income or expenses over more time. Compare the full payment schedule, not just the lowest monthly figure. Our article A longer or shorter term helps with this.
Which alternatives may be realistic
- Reduce the project’s scale, provided the core need is still met.
- Pay deferrable expenses later from savings.
- Include reliable changes only once they occur and are documented.
- Check whether refinancing existing borrowing genuinely saves money.
- For a persistent deficit, involve independent budget or debt advice.
Refinancing helps only when total costs and affordability make sense. Moving several instalments into a longer contract can ease the month but delay becoming debt-free. An uncertain bonus or hoped-for pay rise is not a secure basis either. The alternative should improve your finances, not merely a calculator metric.
When an individual assessment makes sense
If an indication uses incomplete information or misses special circumstances, a documented enquiry may be useful. The requested amount and calculated capacity remain separately visible. Information already recorded should be carried over and checked. Re-entering everything is unnecessary for substantive clarification.
Ask specifically which documents are missing and which item limits higher financing. The answer should be understandable without pre-empting approval. If the information is complete and repayment remains unaffordable, a clear limit is more helpful than repeatedly submitting identical applications.
If there is a monthly deficit or arrears, first stabilise the ongoing situation. Read What to do about payment difficulties. A loan can finance a time-limited need; it does not replace a budget that stays balanced.
Frequently asked questions
Is a low indication already a rejection?
No. It provides guidance. Individual assessment may differ, but must not be understood as a guaranteed promise of a higher amount.
Can I keep my original requested amount?
Yes. It should remain documented separately from calculated capacity. A smaller application requires your deliberate choice.
Does submitting the same enquiry repeatedly help?
Without corrected information or changed circumstances, it normally does not resolve the cause. Clarify the outstanding item first.
Sources and information date

Credit must not be granted if it would lead to over-indebtedness. A budget calculation provides a non-binding indication, not a loan offer.
