Checking your ZEK data report and correcting errors
Check your ZEK report against your documents, identify specific errors and request correction through the responsible institution and official channels.

Challenge incorrect data specifically; correct records cannot simply be erased
If you suspect an error in your ZEK personal data report, first compare the entry with your documents. What matters is exactly what you believe is wrong: identity attribution, contract status, a date or reported payment circumstances. A precise challenge with evidence is easier to assess than a general request to remove every record.
ZEK explains that the reporting member is responsible for the accuracy of its data. It therefore recommends first requesting correction directly from that institution. If clarification cannot be obtained there, ZEK can be involved with the relevant documents. A later payment does not automatically make an earlier accurate historical fact incorrect.
Obtain your own extract securely
Order your personal data report through ZEK’s official access point and follow its identification requirements. According to the published information, the extract is free and delivered by post for data protection reasons. Do not confuse a private paid intermediary’s offer with ordering directly.
Data protection law generally gives you the right to information about personal data being processed. You normally do not need to justify a particular reason. The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner explains general response periods and possible exceptions. For the actual request, follow the data controller’s official procedure. Do not send identification copies to unverified addresses in advertisements or messages.
Compare with your own documents
- Do the name and other identifying details actually belong to you?
- Do you recognise the reporting institution and agreement concerned?
- Do the conclusion date, term and current status match your records?
- Is there confirmation of repayment or completion?
- Is a reported irregularity understandable or demonstrably incorrect?
Mark the relevant line and note beside it what you believe the correct facts are. An executed bank transfer and its later posting by the recipient may have different dates. If dates seem inconsistent, first ask what the report refers to. An unfamiliar detail does not necessarily prove an error.
A record of a correctly serviced agreement is not automatically negative either. A database extract is not a blacklist where every mention means rejection. Separate data accuracy from the question of how a particular lender assesses your creditworthiness.
Write a factual correction request
Identify the institution, agreement or reference and the disputed information. Then briefly describe the correction requested and attach appropriate evidence. This may include a final statement, written confirmation of settlement or payment receipts. Send only information needed for clarification through a verified contact channel.
One possible wording is: “My personal data report lists the specified agreement as outstanding. According to the attached confirmation, it has been settled in full. Please review its status and confirm the result and any correction arranged.” This example is a starting point and must fit the actual facts.
Keep the request, attachments and response organised. If the institution’s reply remains unclear, ask for the basis of the specific report. Data protection or legal advice may help with an unresolved dispute. Merely claiming that a record makes a new loan harder to obtain does not prove it is inaccurate.
What payment and correction do not guarantee
ZEK has retention rules for different types of record. Full repayment therefore does not necessarily mean immediate removal of every historical detail. Check the category applicable to your record on the official page. Do not rely on a third party’s blanket promise of deletion.
Successful correction is not loan approval either. The institution still assesses income, expenses, commitments and its own criteria. For a material correction, wait for confirmation and document the updated position before forming expectations about another application.
Distinguish ZEK, IKO and the debt enforcement register
These three information sources perform different tasks. Correction at one does not automatically clear every other database. When checking several extracts, assign each discrepancy to the correct responsible organisation. Our overview of ZEK and IKO explains the differences.
For a new application, a transparent explanation is more useful than concealing known unresolved questions. Provide the confirmation available and describe the current position. Why even accurate data can lead to different lending decisions is explained in Loan application declined.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have any ZEK record deleted early?
No. Correct historical information is subject to applicable retention rules. Incorrect details can be challenged and corrected.
Who should receive my correction request first?
Generally, the reporting institution named in the extract, with a precise description and suitable evidence.
Does a correction guarantee a new loan?
No. It improves the information basis but does not replace individual credit assessment.
